Dune Buggy and Pregnancy in Dubai: Who Should Not Drive

Can you ride a dune buggy while pregnant in Dubai? The team says pregnant guests should not drive a buggy; see your doctor and declare it when booking.

In this guide

No. The team's guidance is that pregnant guests should not drive a dune buggy. Dune driving is physical, and dune bashing on a desert safari is a rough ride. The same guidance covers riders with back or neck conditions and anyone recovering from recent surgery. See your doctor first, and tell the team about any condition when booking.

The booking details still matter if you are planning for a group. At Dune Buggy Rentals Dubai every buggy is self-drive and priced per buggy, not per person. The 2 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC is AED 600 per buggy for 30 minutes. Rides start every 30 minutes from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, daily, on private desert terrain outside Dubai, and you should plan for about 90 minutes on site for a 30 minute ride.

Key takeaways

  • Pregnant guests, riders with back or neck conditions and riders recovering from recent surgery should not drive a buggy. This is the operator's own guidance.
  • Dune bashing, the dune drive on a desert safari, is described by the team as a rough ride.
  • This guide gives no medical advice. Speak to your doctor before you book anything in the desert.
  • Tell the team about any condition when booking, then mention it again at check-in, when you sign the liability form.
  • If a condition comes up after you have paid, a move to another date is free, subject to availability. Cancellation fees follow two scales: one for fewer than 4 guests and one for 4 or more.
  • Cancellations are accepted by email only, and the time the email arrives sets the fee.
  • Every buggy has a roll cage and harnesses, and every rider wears a helmet and goggles. The kit does not change the guidance above.

Can you ride a dune buggy while pregnant?

The short answer from the team is that pregnant guests should not drive a buggy. The facts the team works from are plain: dune driving is physical, and riders with a pregnancy should not drive. The facts give no trimester rule and no separate version of the ride for pregnant guests.

This guide does not try to judge your own situation. Your doctor knows your history. If you are pregnant and thinking about any desert activity in Dubai, the first step is a conversation with your doctor, and the second step is telling the team when you book.

Why the team asks pregnant guests not to drive

A buggy ride crosses sand dunes, and the driver steers and works the pedals the whole time. That is the context for the team saying dune driving is physical.

The buggies are automatic, so there is no clutch and no gears to change. That makes them easier to learn. It does not make the ride itself any smoother for the body.

What about riding in the passenger seat?

A 2 seater carries the driver and one passenger, and a 4 seater carries the driver and three, so it can seem natural to move a pregnant guest into a passenger seat.

The guidance names driving, but a passenger in a buggy travels over exactly the same dunes, in the same convoy, for the same ride length as the driver. Do not assume the passenger seat is the answer. Ask your doctor about riding in a buggy at all, and tell the team about the pregnancy before you book a seat for anyone in that condition. The dune buggy passenger guide explains how seats and kit work for passengers in general.

Is dune bashing safe during pregnancy?

The team does not describe dune bashing as suitable during pregnancy. The words it uses are "a rough ride". Dune bashing is the 4x4 drive across the sand that many desert safaris are known for, and it is a different thing from sitting at a desert camp.

The safaris on the booking form run in a Land Cruiser 4X4 and include hotel pickup. The shared Classic Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner is AED 240 per adult (12+) and AED 225 per child (5 to 11). The Morning Desert Safari With Land Cruiser 4X4 is AED 225 per adult and AED 210 per child. The private versions are priced per car for up to 6 guests: AED 799 per car for the private morning and AED 1,400 per car for the private evening with the BBQ dinner and shows.

If you are pregnant, ask your doctor about any safari before you book, and ask the team what the drive on your chosen safari involves.

Desert safari with or without dune bashing

The booking form lists BBQ Dinner + Live Entertainment Shows at a Standard Camp or Premium Camp, described as having no safari drive. Standard Camp is AED 125 per person and Premium Camp is AED 250 per person, and a private transfer at AED 450 per car for 5 to 6 guests must be booked with it. The shows are belly dance, fire show and tanoura.

That description tells you what the product includes. It is not a medical judgement. You still travel to the camp by car and spend an evening in the desert, so the same two steps apply: speak to your doctor, and declare the pregnancy to the team when you book.

Who should not drive a dune buggy?

The facts the team works from name three groups who should not drive a buggy:

  • Riders with a pregnancy.
  • Riders with back or neck conditions.
  • Riders recovering from recent surgery.

If you have any other health condition and are unsure whether a desert ride makes sense for you, treat it the same way. See your doctor, then tell the team when booking.

Buggy drivers are also adults who carry photo ID. That is a separate rule from the health guidance, and both apply.

Dune buggy back problems

A back condition is one of the conditions the team names directly. The buggy seat, harness and roll cage hold you in place, but the vehicle still moves over the dunes for the whole ride, and the driver is working the steering and pedals the entire time.

The team does not grade back conditions into mild and serious, and this guide will not either. That is a question for your doctor. If you have a back condition of any kind, ask your doctor before booking and mention it to the team when you book.

Neck conditions

Neck conditions sit in the same line of the guidance as back conditions. Every rider wears a helmet for the whole ride, which is not optional, so a rider with a neck condition is also carrying a helmet through the movement of the ride. Raise it with your doctor and declare it to the team.

Dune buggy after surgery

Recent surgery is the third named condition. The facts do not set a number of weeks or months after which a rider is cleared to drive, and nobody on site will set one for you. Your surgeon or doctor is the person to ask.

If your trip to Dubai comes soon after an operation, raise the buggy ride at your follow-up appointment and tell the team about the surgery when you book. If the answer from your doctor is to wait, the date move and cancellation rules further down explain what happens to your booking.

How and when to declare a condition

The guidance ends with four words: tell the team when booking. There are two moments to do it.

When you book

Bookings are made online and paid in full by Visa or Mastercard in AED, with no card processing fee. The booking confirmation arrives by email. Before or as you book, contact the team so the condition is on record with your booking.

You can call the team on +971 52 440 9525 or email [email protected]. The contact page has the same details.

When you write, include:

  • The name on the booking and the date and start time.
  • The activity booked, for example a 2 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC for 1 hour.
  • Who in the group has the condition, and whether that person was planning to drive or ride.
  • What the condition is, in plain words: pregnancy, a back or neck condition, or recent surgery.
  • Anything your doctor has told you about the trip.

Again at check-in

On the day, check-in includes signing the liability form. That is the second moment to mention the condition. Tell the staff member at check-in before you sign, even if you already emailed. It puts the condition in front of the people running your ride, and it is your signature on the form.

A declare-before-booking checklist

Work through this list before you pay for any buggy, quad, dirt bike or safari:

  1. Speak to your doctor about the specific activity, and say it involves driving or riding over sand dunes.
  2. Decide who in the group will drive. Nobody with a pregnancy, a back or neck condition or recent surgery should be listed as a driver.
  3. Contact the team by phone or email and describe the condition before you book.
  4. Keep the reply, and keep your booking confirmation email.
  5. Mention the condition again at check-in, before you sign the liability form.
  6. If anything changes after booking, email the team straight away, because the time your email arrives matters for any cancellation fee.

What a passenger should declare

The facts say that riders with these conditions should not drive, and that dune bashing is a rough ride. They do not say a passenger seat is any different. So a guest who only planned to sit beside the driver should declare a pregnancy, a back or neck condition or recent surgery in exactly the same way as a driver would. The same applies to anyone booked on a safari.

What happens on site: the 90 minute sequence

Plan for about 90 minutes on site for a 30 minute buggy ride. The time covers:

  • Check-in.
  • Signing the liability form.
  • Fitting the helmet and goggles.
  • The safety briefing.
  • The drive.
  • The photo stop.

The safety briefing covers the controls, hand signals and the convoy order. With the walkaround of the machine it usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

During the ride a guide rides ahead of the buggies for the whole ride and sets the pace for the least experienced driver, so nobody is sent off alone. The convoy stops on a ridgeline for photos.

No buggy price includes pickup. You can add a sharing transfer at AED 175 per person, for two or more guests from one pickup point, or a private car at AED 450 per car for 5 to 6 guests. Pickup is 1 hour before the start. You can also meet on site, and the location is emailed after booking.

What safety kit is fitted and included?

Every buggy ride includes:

  • A helmet and goggles for each rider.
  • Fuel.
  • A safety briefing.
  • A guide.
  • Unlimited mineral water.

Each buggy has a roll cage and harnesses. Quad riders also get gloves. Closed-toe shoes are required, and sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. The what to wear guide covers clothing and shoes in more detail.

The kit is fitted for every rider. It does not replace the guidance above or a conversation with your doctor.

Each activity, what it involves and what to do

The table below uses only what the booking facts say about each activity. It does not rate anything as suitable for a pregnancy, a back or neck condition or recent surgery. For every row the step is the same: ask your doctor and declare the condition when booking.

Activity What the facts say about it What to do
Self-drive dune buggy Dune driving is physical; riders with a pregnancy, back or neck conditions or recent surgery should not drive Do not drive; see your doctor and tell the team when booking
Passenger seat in a buggy Same convoy, same dunes and same ride length as the driver; the facts do not treat it differently Ask your doctor; declare the condition when booking and at check-in
Quad bikes Single seater and double seater quads run in the fenced area or the open deep desert; quad riders get gloves and helmets Ask your doctor; declare the condition when booking
KTM Dirt Bike 450 CC Guided, for riders with some two-wheel experience; most first-timers find 1 hour plenty Ask your doctor; declare the condition when booking
Desert safari in a Land Cruiser 4X4 Dune bashing is a rough ride Ask your doctor; ask the team what the drive involves; declare it when booking
Camel Ride Experience in Dubai Desert 15 to 25 min, daily 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM; also a 20 to 25 min add-on Ask your doctor; declare the condition when booking
Standard Camp or Premium Camp BBQ dinner Listed with no safari drive; a private transfer must be booked with it Ask your doctor; declare the condition when booking
Hot air balloon flights Pickup 3:45 to 4:30 AM Ask your doctor; declare the condition when booking

What you would be booking: buggy and transfer prices

If a condition comes up after you book, these are the bookings you would be moving or cancelling. Prices are per buggy, not per person, and a transfer is priced on its own.

What if a condition comes up after you book?

A pregnancy may be confirmed after you paid, or an operation may be scheduled before your trip. Here is what the booking terms say.

Moving the date

A move to another date is free, subject to availability. If your doctor suggests waiting rather than cancelling, ask the team about a later date first. Email them as soon as you know, because availability is the only condition on the move.

Cancellation for bookings of fewer than 4 guests

  • Cancel 96 hours or more before departure: no fee, refunded less a 5% processing fee.
  • At least 48 hours before departure: a 50% fee.
  • Under 24 hours before departure: a 100% fee.

Cancellation for bookings of 4 or more guests

  • Cancel 7 days before departure: a 50% fee.
  • 5 days or less before departure: the fee is 100%.

Refunds go to the original card within 7 to 10 business days. The cancellation policy page sets out both scales in full.

How to cancel

Cancel by email only. The time the email arrives sets the fee, so a phone call alone does not fix the time of your cancellation. Send the email to [email protected] with your booking name, date and start time.

If the team cancels for weather

If the team cancels for weather, guests get a refund less 5% or a new date. That is separate from a health-related change on your side.

Planning a group trip around a condition

If one person in your group has a condition and the rest do not:

  • Book the drivers you actually have. A buggy is priced per buggy, so think about who will drive before you choose a 2 seater or a 4 seater. Nobody with a named condition should be the driver.
  • Tell the team about the guest with the condition even if that guest is not booked on a buggy at all. If they are travelling on your transfer and waiting at the site, the team should know.
  • Speak to your doctor early. If the advice is to skip the desert, the sooner your email arrives, the more of the cancellation scale works in your favour, and a date move is free, subject to availability.

In short

Pregnant guests, riders with back or neck conditions and anyone recovering from recent surgery should not drive a dune buggy, and dune bashing is a rough ride. This guide does not give medical advice. See your doctor, then tell the team when you book and again when you sign the liability form at check-in.

When you are ready, or if you want to talk a condition through first, call +971 52 440 9525, email [email protected], or book your buggy ride on the activities form.

FAQ

Questions to ask before you rent a buggy

Can you ride a dune buggy while pregnant?
The operator's guidance is that pregnant guests should not drive a buggy, because dune driving is physical. The guidance does not treat the passenger seat as a different case, so do not assume riding beside the driver is the answer. Speak to your doctor before you book, then tell the team about the pregnancy when booking and again at check-in.
Is dune bashing safe during pregnancy?
The team does not describe dune bashing as suitable during pregnancy and calls it a rough ride. If a Land Cruiser 4X4 safari is part of your plan, ask your doctor first and ask the team what the drive on that safari involves. Declare the pregnancy when you book so it is on record with your booking.
Who should not drive a dune buggy?
The team names three groups who should not drive a buggy: riders with a pregnancy, riders with back or neck conditions, and riders recovering from recent surgery. Buggy drivers must also be adults carrying photo ID. If you have another condition and are unsure, see your doctor and tell the team before booking.
Can I drive a buggy with back problems or after surgery?
Back and neck conditions and recent surgery are both on the list of reasons not to drive a buggy. The team sets no grade of severity and no recovery period, so those questions belong with your doctor or surgeon. Tell the team about the condition when you book and again before signing the liability form.
How do I tell the team about a medical condition?
Call +971 52 440 9525 or email [email protected] when you book. Give the booking name, date, start time, the activity, who has the condition and whether that person planned to drive. On the day, mention it again at check-in, before you sign the liability form.
What happens to my booking if I find out I am pregnant after paying?
Email the team as soon as you know. A move to another date is free, subject to availability. If you cancel instead, bookings of fewer than 4 guests cancelled 96 hours or more before departure have no fee and are refunded less a 5% processing fee; groups of 4 or more follow their own scale.
Can I cancel a dune buggy booking by phone?
No. Cancellations are accepted by email only, and the time the email arrives sets the fee. For bookings of 4 or more guests, cancelling 7 days before departure carries a 50% fee, and 5 days or less before departure the fee is 100%. Refunds go to the original card within 7 to 10 business days.
